FocusGTD 3.9.0 - OmniFocus 4.7 catches up

It has been a busy few weeks. OmniFocus 4.7 introduced a couple of new features and I wanted FocusGTD to keep up with them, so that nothing gets lost or silently ignored when you sync between your Mac and your Android device. In the last three weeks I have released 3.8.0 up to 3.9.0.

Here is what changed.

Planned dates (3.8.0)

OmniFocus 4.7 added a new kind of date, the planned date. FocusGTD now syncs them, lets you edit them and shows them in the task lists, in the Forecast and in the widget.

A better Forecast (3.8.0)

  • The day tiles in the Forecast now show small summary dots, so you can see at a glance what is waiting on a given day.
  • Each day now has one flexible list. If you prefer the old layout, choose “Organized” and the sections stay.
  • The Forecast now also refreshes when the day changes while the app is open. No more stale “today”.

Repeating tasks can finally end (3.9.0)

Until now FocusGTD did not know what to do with the end condition of a repeating task. Now it keeps it and honors it. In the repeat editor you can choose between

  • never,
  • after N times, or
  • on a date.

The setting is synced with OmniFocus in both directions. While testing this I stumbled over a few edge cases (clock change days, undoing a completion of the last repetition), which are fixed as well.

Catch up automatically (3.9.0)

Another OmniFocus 4.7 feature. When you complete an overdue repeating task, the missed occurrences are skipped rather than piling up one after the other. I have verified this on a real device against OmniFocus 4.9.3.

Mutually exclusive tag groups (3.9.0)

Tag groups in OmniFocus 4.7 can be marked as mutually exclusive. If you choose a tag of such a group in FocusGTD, it now replaces the other tags of that group. After the update the app asks once before it reloads your local data, because it needs to learn which groups are exclusive.

Fixes

  • FIX: crash when opening a tag with the view mode “All” (3.8.1)
  • FIX: crash on start-up on some devices where the system job scheduler is broken (3.8.2)
  • FIX: crash in the background when the system wakes up the app for the scheduled sync (3.8.3)
  • FIX: the repeat unit is shown in your language in the repeat editor
  • FIX: crash when a task list was opened without knowing what to show
  • IMPROVED: updated for Android 16

As always, if you find something that does not work as expected, please let me know.
